While everyone was obsessed with Succession, Industry was winning viewers over at the height of COVID.
Succession has since ended, but Industry returns for the third season this August. The bad news is that the season will be less one main character.
David Jonsson has portrayed Gus Sackey so eloquently for the past two seasons.
Details about the third season are finally out, and it seems Gus’ fans (who isn’t after that speech in the first season’s finale) must contend with his absence.
Who’s Gus?
Gus is one of the original characters in the first season who joins Pierpoint as a junior analyst. While everyone almost buckles under pressure (and some do), he uses his intellect, calm composure, and measured actions to try and get ahead.
Gus takes to the environment like fish to water while his peers try to find their place in this new environment in which they feel lucky to occupy a small space.
It inspires his confidence but maybe also inflates his ego
In his personal life, Gus gets involved with Theo Tuck (Will Tudor), a slightly senior analyst at Pierpoint. Theo is closeted, but there is something about Gus that will make a man give in and get screwed on the couch downstairs while his “girlfriend” is upstairs.
Season 2 finds Gus out from Pierpoint, trying to find something to fill the void. It didn’t seem like the character would be part of the season, but the show expanded the narrative to include him.
The season finds him working for billionaire Jesse Bloom (Jay Duplass), but the job is not quite fulfilling, even when it involves some fooling around with Jesse’s son, Leo Bloom (Sonny Poon Tip).
Why David Jonsson Is Not In ‘Industry’ Season 3
It is not clear why Jonsson will not join returning cast members Myha’la, Marisa Abela, Harry Lawtey, Ken Leung, Conor MacNeill, Sagar Radia, Indy Lewis, Adam Levy, Sarah Parish, Trevor White, Elena Saurel, and Irfan Shamji.
Of late, Jonsson’s career has seen significant growth after starring in the romcom Rye Lane (not gay), Murder Is Easy (also not gay), and the upcoming sequel to Alien, Alien Romulus (gayness TBD).
This is just speculation as to why he is not returning, but his costars have seen similar career growths, so there might be something else.
How Jonsson’s Absence Affects ‘Industry’
Sex is a hobby for characters on Industry, and they will have it with anyone who will consent to it with them.
As a result, most of the characters are technically queer. Gus is the only canonically gay character. The show will lose a great character and a gay representation.
Lawtey’s character, Robert Spearing, is also hinted as being queer after hooking up with some guy in a bathroom. But knowing Robert, it was probably the coke doing all the work. He has been involved in other relationships, but none with a guy.
There’s a lot to look forward to, including new cast members led by Kit Harington as Sir Henry Muck, Sarah Goldberg as Petra Koenig, Miriam Petche as Sweetpea Golightly, Andrew Havill as Lord Norton, Roger Barclay as Otto Mostyn, Fady Elsayed as Ali El Mansour, and Fiona Button as Denise Oldroyd.
The official description (below) teases more money moves as the characters tackle the next chapter of their professional and personal lives.
In season three, as Pierpoint looks to the future and takes a big bet on ethical investing, Yasmin, Robert, and Eric find themselves front and center in the splashy IPO of Lumi, a green tech energy company led by Sir Henry Muck, in a story that runs all the way to the very top of finance, media, and government.
Since leaving Pierpoint, Harper is eager to get back into the addictive thrill of finance and finds an unlikely partner in FutureDawn portfolio manager Petra Koenig.
