Netflix set the internet on fire with the Spanish drama series Elite. After eight seasons, the show fizzled out in 2024, but the streaming platform has another replacement, Olympo.
Set in competitive sports, Olympo has all the signs of being the next Elite. Below is its official synopsis.
“The country’s best athletes train at the Pirineos High Performance Center, such as Amaia, the captain of the national synchronized swimming team who demands only the best from herself and does not allow any mistakes.
“But when her teammate and best friend Núria outstrips her for the first time, Amaia realizes that some athletes are inexplicably improving their performance… After years of pushing their bodies to the limit and sacrificing their lives for the sport, they face a dilemma: how far are they willing to go?”
Cast members include Agustin Della Corte as Roque Pérez, Nuno Gallego as Cristian Delallave, Gleb Abrosimov as Diego Sorokov, Manuel Marín as Lope “Lobo” Cantós, Ramina Paiman as Laura Lorenzo, Laura Ubach as Clara “Peque” Casals, Clara Galle as Amaia Olaberria, Juan Perales as Sebas Senghor, Laura Moray as Jennifer Pina, Martí Cordero as Charly Lago, and Najwa Khliwa as Fátima Amazian.
‘Olympo’ Has Strong Connections to ‘Elite.’
The Elite connection is not contrived.
The show comes from ZETA Studios, the studio behind Elite, and features cast members from Elite, namely Gallego and Abrosimov.
The former joined in the final season, playing Hector Krawitz, a trouble-making Las Encinas alum who sets his eyes on Joel (Fernando Lindez). The latter played Eric.
The most significant connection is a thematic one: It follows young sportspeople, and love and lust exist where there are (young) people.
The best thing is you don’t have to sit through hours of (potentially) boring stories for the chance to see an achillean ship.
The images tease an emotional gay love story as something develops between Roque and Sebas. The setting provides an excellent opportunity to explore homophobia in sports.
Another image shows the characters half-dressed in the sauna, teasing some raunchy sex scenes.
Whether it delivers a good story or an even greater love story remains to be seen, but color us intrigued.
Olympo doesn’t have a premiere date yet.
