Come June 9, viewers will join nine Japanese men in a quest to find love in The Boyfriend.

While everyone is playing catch up, Netflix is always inventing new ways to grow subscribers and keep their current ones. The best strategy is to offer a variety of content, and The Boyfriend is surely bound to have that effect because the series is one of its kind on Netflix and everywhere else.

The series is set in the “Green Room,” beach house property where the men will live together for a month. They will take turns working shifts at a peppermint green coffee truck, forging deep friendships and learning about themselves along the way.

The Boyfriend focuses on the men’s attempt to find love, but that’s not all it is. Friendships and connections with other people are very important, something Dai Ota, executive producer and manager of live-action originals at Netflix Japan, spoke about, saying,

“We started out wanting to highlight the young men’s friendships and personalities. Our focus wasn’t just on romance but also on spending time together and experiencing personal growth.”

The creatives behind the show promise something familiar yet different based on how it approaches relationships and romance.

Kyodo Television’s Keisuke Hishida serves as the chief producer and director, and he talked about building the series with the cast, saying,

“I discussed with the cast how growth and valuable experiences stem from shared friendships, youth and struggles, not just romance. This led to many unexpected miracles on set.”

Model, DJ, and YouTube vlogger Taiki takes on the roles of producer and casting director. On bringing the charismatic group together, he says,

“I’m so happy with how this series took shape. I listened to each participant with a goal to produce a show that left everyone feeling valued and loved.”

Hosted by an eclectic mix of personalities, including MEGUMI, Chiaki Horan, Thelma Aoyama, drag queen Durian Lollobrigida, and Yoshimi Tokui, the show promises to deliver a rollercoaster of emotions.

‘The Boyfriend’ Teaser Trailer

A short trailer accompanying the news sets the tone for the rest of the series.

It features the yet-to-be-disclosed cast as they journey toward finding love, friendship, and personhood.

It features expected and unexpected scenes as the men build romantic and platonic connections and discuss their feelings surrounding queerness and love, of course.

The teaser is set to the lively and heartwarming track “Dazed & Confused” by Korean indie rock band Glen Check.

Netflix released three teaser posters, including one illustrated by Korean artist Son Eunkyoung. You can find them in this post.

Find out how relationships develop when The Boyfriend premieres on July 9 exclusively on Netflix. New episodes will drop every Tuesday every week, and the final episodes of the 10-episode season will air in the fourth and final week.
